The institute offers research in following areas:
Electronics and Electrical Communication Engineering: - The research activities can be grouped under several major areas as mentioned below: Communication Engineering: Digital Modulation Techniques, Digitization of Speech; Bandwidth Compression of Speech Signals; Picture Coding; Spread Spectrum Techniques; Speech Frequency, Multimedia Encryption, Satellite Communication, Mobile Communication, Computer Communication. Visual Information and Embedded Systems: Computer Vision, Computer Networks, Microcontrollers and embedded systems, Fuzzy Techniques and Pattern Recognition, Image and Video Processing, Video and Multimedia Coding, Automated Visual Inspection, Gesture Recognition, Real-time Architectures for Image and Video Processing, Video Transcoding, Multimedia Networking, Video Indexing and Retrieval, Biomedical Image Processing.
Microwave, Millimeter wave and Antenna Engineering: Microwave Antennas, RF and Microwave Integrated Circuits, Millimetric Waves, Magnetostatic Waves, Microstrip Antennas, Phased Array Antennas, EMI/EMC/PSD, Microwave and Millimeter wave Systems and Propagation, Computational Techniques, Radar Cross Section. Microelectronics: CVD for Silox and Polysilicon, Plasma Processing and Ion-beam, High Speed Address Multipliers, Gate Array, Process Modeling, Special purpose Signal Processors and their application in Biomedical Instrumentation, CAD of LSI/VLSI Systems, Device Modeling, MEMS.
Admission Procedure: - Selection is based on performance in GATE and Personal Interview of short-listed candidates. Marks obtained in GATE and in personal interview will have 70% and 30% weightage respectively. Personal interview will be held to test the following: (a) Motivation and aptitude for the programme (b) Oral communication skills (c) Skills in basic science, engineering, and relevant areas. The institute does not conduct any test/interview except for candidates appearing in GATE from XE/XL papers. The cut-off score for getting Counselling letter varies from branch to branch. Applicants can choose a suitable course out of 47 courses offered by the institute by their academic background (degree or equivalent in BE/BTech/BArch/etc.).
At the time of counselling, applicants will be offered seats depending upon their GATE score, eligibility and options given in the application form. Those applicants who do not report for counselling will not be eligible for admission in the session. The selected applicants will have to hand over the original GATE Scorecard along with demand draft towards fees. One advantage with IIT Kharagpur is that there is no need to fill up different form for different department as one can give eight preferences (maximum) in a single application form, which is not the case with other IITs.
