Change default path for installing programs

More people are using different drive to install software when their default derive (i.e C:\) free space size is very small.

Windows XP or 7 uses C:\Program Files directory as the default base directory into which new programs are installed. When you are installing any software then you can change installation directory by customizing it. But in this process, you have to change the directory every time when you are installing a new software. However, you can change this default installation directory / derive from registry.

  • First go to Run and type regedit press enter.
  • Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion (double click on CurrentVersion folder).
  • Double click on ProgramFilesDir. By default, this value will be C:\Program Files. Edit the value to any valid drive or folder and Windoes XP/7 will use that new location as the default installation directory for new programs.
